Christmas Lecture – 12/16/07
On Sunday, Dec 16, the China Cafe held a lecture entitled “Christmas in America” followed by a Christmas party. Guest lecturer Elaine Tulip, (in real life, Lisa Perez from Chicago), shared information about how Christmas is often celebrated in the United States. She overviewed the religious significance of the holiday, secular celebrations related to Santa Claus, symbols of Christmas, the importance of Christmas trees, and how Americans often celebrate Christmas at parties with family and friends. During the lecture, attendees received a notecard with free Christmas gifts, including a hat, Christmas tree, ornament, candy canes, and a wreath. The lecture was followed by a Christmas party in which persons feasted on turkey, ham, egg nog, cookies, and Black Forest cake.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that’s not an issue, but if you’re planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod’s larger screen and better browser may be important.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod’s strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

In the case Im fighting with now, we stand over the shoulder of two girls hugging their knees sitting atop a high rock as they look down over the north shore of Lake Superior. the incitement is: are we there with them?, can we feel it?, is this just a collection of attempts to represent related objects in a space, or does it all hit you together as a real moment? If the viewer walks away without getting stunned with a blast of the latter, there is no obligatory resolution. If almost nobody gets that, the painting has certainly failed. Just like the newer Star Wars films, the more you put into rendering all the clues that set you up for the resolution, the worse it fails when it doesnt make it. Thats the main reason why realism in paint fell out of favor, cause its hard to pull off. What most contemporary artists do is make the incitement so obscure or non existent, that the viewer has to supply their own, releasing the author of the piece from responsibility from coming up with an obligatory scene. Get it? no incitement, no obligation! no courage required from the artist except whatever audacity it requires to pass off emptiness as art. There is always more bad art than good because its way easier.

The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod’s. It works well, but isn’t as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. We got calculators in high school. In Jr. High we had them to but they were forbidden unless the teach said so. Anytime before that was all just learning how to do everything by hand. It is only when you start getting into Math Pure 10-31 that you realize you couldnt possible do it all by hand. You would maybe get through one question per class! Then there is university math. That is the real hard stuff.Maybe some school systems are different but in Canada they taught me how to count. I think those kids that cant count the cash register are probably just lazy, like most of societies youngsters today. It is pretty easy to give people change. But when you mention this it makes me really worry about the education children are getting. School shouldnt be something parents drop you off at just so they dont have to deal with you all day. It should actually be useful. To expect a child to spend 8 hours a day in a school and then come home with mountains of homework is pretty much asking the kid to fail. I know if I was given home assignments after my 9 hour work day I would tell my bosses to go stuff themselves. Home schooling only requires something like 5 hour days, whereas you could spend that other 3 hours teaching the kid something useful about life. Like how to do the laundry, cook, tend the garden, whatever. I intend to homeschool my children. Teach them useful things with that spare time. Prepare them for real life. That is something public schooling never taught me.

Hands down, Apple’s app store wins by a mile. It’s a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I’m not sure I’d want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like ‘Mixview’ that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you’re listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of “neighbors” will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune “Social” is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it’ll do even better in those areas, but for now it’s a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard.
